org (derived from organization) is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) of the Domain Name System (DNS) used in the Internet. org is sometimes pronounced in word form as 'org', 'dot-org', or 'dot-oh-are-gee (O R G)'.

The org gTLD was originally intended for non-profit organizations, or organizations of a non-commercial character. It was one of the original top-level domains (the other five being com, edu, gov, mil and net) , established in January 1985, originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs. The MITRE Corporation was the first group to register an org domain with mitre.org in July 1985.

Registrations in the org are processed via accredited registrars worldwide. Anyone can register an org second-level domain. Although org was recommended for non-commercial entities, there are no restrictions to registration. There are many instances of org being used by commercial sites, although some people question whether it is ethical to do so. org was also commonly recommended for use by individuals, although name and info are now alternatives.

The org TLD has been operated since January 1, 2003 by Public Interest Registry, who assumed the task from VeriSign Global Registry Services, a division of VeriSign.

Although organizations anywhere in the world can register org domains, many countries have a second-level domain with a similar purpose under their own country code top-level domain (ccTLD). Such second-level domains are usually of the form org.cc or or.cc, where cc is the country code. jp and uk are examples of this convention.

How many board members can you have in a non profit org?
Q. I want to start a non-profit org. Kinda like a religious center. And I need to know what is the maximum amount of board members we can have? I need to know if there is a maximum amount. Also the organization will be based out of Los Angeles, California.

A. Minimum of 3-5 depends on the articles and needs of the organization, for each board is designated to hold responsibility in term of services to the organization.

Anyone used Idealist.org for volunteering or an internship?
Q. I love Idealist.org for its plentiful international opportunities and am seriously considering applying to do some volunteer work abroad next year. For example, working with orphan children in Peru is one volunteer listing I'm interested in. Has anyone had a personal experience using Idealist.org for this purpose? Specifically, what to look for when choosing a listing? What additional questions to ask? How to make sure you get this exact experience you're signing up for?

A. I haven't used idealist for that, although I've applied for a few jobs that way. Watch internship descriptions. The smaller and more frantic the organization is for help, often the less time they've had for working out exactly what they need, who they need and what they can provide. That doesn't make new, small groups bad; just raw. If you need lots of structure, either for yourself or as a resume/job boost, I'd go with a well-established group that's very specific. Absolutely ask to talk to others who've been interns. Once you've drained them dry, including asking, "What else can you tell me that I didn't think to ask?" and "What surprised you the most?" ask them for contact information for an intern or worker who had a tough experience. Media bigs seem to have reached the conclusion that hatred sells, so they're embracing their inner sexists and inner racists.
