A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated circuits are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile phone to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.

How do I network computers in two rooms wirelessly but still use ethernet cables going into all the actual PCs?
Q. I currently have one office with a wired network and am about to get a second office room across the hall. But I'm not allowed to drill holes. How can I hook up computers in the new room to join in the existing wired network we have and access our file server without running a cable across the hallway (and still use wired computers in the new room)?

A. Set up a 'Wireless router' like the Linksys WRT-54G in the 'wired office. Get another one or an Access Point and put that in the 'un-wired' office. You can then use a wire to that router or access point and have it broadcast to the other one and to the internet. Use the strongest encryption that the routers and devices can support.

A. printer sharing is done over a network. the software to create a simple network is built into Windows XP (and earlier versions). i'm not familiar with your hardware and so I don't know if it includes or functions as a switch ... you need a switch function to route info (print data) from one computer to the other. oh

How do I network a bunch of computers already sharing an internet connection?
Q. My computers are all successfully sharing a dsl internet connection via a wireless router. But I can't figure out how to get them to see each other on a file sharing network, What am I missing? No single computer can see any other computers, but they can all use the dsl connection. What gives? I've networked the old fashioned way before so what am I missing?

A. The faster/easier way to get from one computer to another is to just go to start>run, type \computername, hit ok, and it will show all the shared files/printers avaliable on that computer. If you would really like to go the long browsing way just make sure each computer is in the same workgroup here: rightclick on my computer and go to properties go to computer name click change enter your workgroup name/make sure it is correct hit ok on everything (including restart) All of the computers should now appear in the same workgroup in my network places.
