From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Ethernet is a family of frame-based computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs). The name comes from the physical concept of the ether. It defines a number of wiring and signaling standards for the Physical Layer of the OSI networking model as well as a common addressing format and Media Access Control at the Data Link Layer. Ethernet is standardized as IEEE 802.3. The combination of the twisted pair versions of Ethernet for connecting end systems to the network, along with the fiber optic versions for site backbones, is the most widespread wired LAN technology. It has been in use from around 1980 to the present, largely replacing competing LAN standards such as token ring, FDDI, and ARCNET. A standard 8P8C (often called RJ45) connector used most commonly on cat5 cable, a type of cabling used primarily in Ethernet networks. GNU Free Documentation License How do you allow for one ethernet cable to work on two computers? Q. Whenever I plug my ethernet cable into a second computer a message pops up and says my internet connection is limited. How do I fix this so my ethernet cable gives execellent quality to both computers? Asked by allstar_10893 - Tue Jan 1 14:36:16 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Do yourself a favor and get a router. That way you can connect more than one at a time. What is happening now is the modem is not issuing an new IP address. You can either restart the modem with a power cycle or go into the computer and do a refresh of the IP address. My laptop has wireless and ethernet. I can't find the desktop's USB, so I want to temporarily attach it to my laptop through ehternet and then use the wireless on the laptop to create a network bridge. They are both running Ubuntu 9.10. Is this possible to do? Asked by Vistro - Thu Nov 26 12:54:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow, that's a tough one. I'm not sure if that's possible. What I would try is to create a peer to peer connection and see if it works on Ubuntu. If it doesn't, I'm out of ideas. Q. I have a Motorola SB5120 modem and I want to know how to switch from usb internet connection to ethernet connection. I already have an ethernet card. I have windows vista if that helps. After you connect the ethernet cable to your computer and modem you no longer need the usb connected. The back of your modem should look like this Ethernet--->First USB--->Second Coax--->third (you dont need to mess with that since it should be already connected) Power--->fourth (you dont need to mess with that either if it is already powered on) I hope this helped! :) Answered by The Truth - Sat Jan 3 00:51:50 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "ethernet" LightPointe Unveils Next Generation 60 GHz Millimeter-Wave (MMW) Gigabit ...
