ICANN (pronounced /aɪkæn/, eye-can) is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. Headquartered in Marina Del Rey, California, United States, ICANN is a non-profit corporation that was created on September 18, 1998 in order to oversee a number of Internet-related tasks previously performed directly on behalf of the U.S. government by other organizations, notably the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

ICANN's tasks include responsibility for Internet Protocol (IP) address space allocation, protocol identifier assignment, generic (gTLD) and country code (ccTLD) top-level domain name system management, and root server system management functions. More generically, ICANN is responsible for managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses. To date, much of its work has concerned the introduction of new generic top-level domains (TLDs). The technical work of ICANN is referred to as the IANA function. ICANN's other primary function involves helping preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of global Internet community; and to develop policies appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.

On September 29, 2006, ICANN signed a new agreement with the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) that is a step forward toward the full management of the Internet's system of centrally coordinated identifiers through the multi-stakeholder model of consultation that ICANN represents.

Paul Twomey was the President/CEO of ICANN from March 27, 2003 until July 1 2009. when Rod Beckstrom will take over appointed as CEO and President.

On November 3, 2007, Peter Dengate Thrush replaced Vint Cerf as Chairman of the ICANN Board of Directors .

Why is ICANN trying to eliminate the Soviet Union's domain name (.SU) even though there is demand for it?
Q. There are still 10,000 registered Soviet Union domains, 1500 of them having been registered just this year. However, the ICANN has been trying to delete the Soviet domain name for 15 years. Clearly, there is alot of interest in Soviet Union domain names. Capitalism is actually preserving the last remnant of the former Communist superpower. Why not let the domain stay in existence? The fight to kill the Soviet domain appears to be futile. If you want to register a .su domain, you can find a few registrars with a Google search. They do cost alot more than most domain names though (the price was recently dropped from 3000 rubles to 600 rubles; basically from $125 down to $25; most domains today are $5-$10).

A. 15 months after September 19, 1990, the "Soviet Union" ceased to exist, most "Russian" TLD domains can now use .ru . Quick, get hillaryclinton.su because it would be much more apt :)

A. not sure but I recently heard that there is a new law that allows for those sending hurtful or vicious lies to be prosecuted---this is due to the case of the young girl that took her own life due to the harassing emails she got from a rival. However, it seems that the mother of this 2nd girl that was interested in the same guy wrote the vicious lies and stuff about the 1st girl; it was too much for her. the mom said that she never emailed anything so she got off from criminal charges; she could have been charged for the girls death/suicide, wish I knew; I heard this on Bill O'reily so you might get information there---some site that he shows there--smallvillage.com or something like that. Hope you get your justice. :)

How can I renew a website I've owned for ten years?
Q. I've just found out that ICANN regulations seem to prohibit anyone from from continuing to own a site they have had for ten years. Seems at the end of ten years it reverts tothe public domain again. Big mulit-nationals don't seem to encounter this. How can I continue to own the site I've had for almost ten years now?

A. The limit refers to multiyear registrations at the same time. The idea was to only allow a domain to be registered for up to 10 years at a time, and then if the domain name was NOT renewed, then it would revert to public domain. By forcing the domain to be renewed periodically, it was hoped to keep the domain information current.
